SEMINAR 1

SEMINAR 1: SEARCHES

The first seminar of the subject, on February 15, was aimed at two important objectives, on the one hand to start with the creation of this blog and on the other hand to learn how to search in scientific databases.

For the creation of the blog I helped a YouTube channel, whose link I leave you just below if you want to consult it; Is quite simple and practical and barely steals a few minutes depending on the quality you want for your blog.

Second, the search in databases was more complicated; Search for thesaurus, academic articles or ask questions PICO (which I will explain below) can not be found in search engines like CHROME and Wikipedia is already too short in these cases.
So, if you are thinking of looking for research articles on which to support you for your work ... FOLLOW THESE STEPS.

1.      What do you want to research? Choose a topic, a problem that you observe around you or in your field of work, or simply something that you would like to know more deeply. The case we had in GROUP 1 was to demonstrate which method was most effective for handwashing, whether antiseptic soaps or hydroalcoholic solutions.

1.      Ask a question PICO:

You can help to ask the question in this web page: https://www.tripdatabase.com/

1.      Find concepts related to the topic, most of the databases are in English so the terms you are going to use you can translate or find them in the TESAURUS, I recommend one of these two ...

To add your terms to the search you only have to click on "Add to search builder", if you also want one of them to be the main one, (Majr), click on "Restric to MeSH". Try to look for increasingly concrete words to be concrete, for example, soaps, efficiency, hydro-alcohol solutions ... but to add them you need BOLEAN OPERATORS.

1.      Look for the best Boolean operators, if you do not know what they are, simply know that they allow to increase the efficiency of the bibliographic searches. In the case of MeSH you add them automatically without having to write them yourself. But now let us expose the most important and perhaps most useful:

• AND AND OR: surely the most used. With AND, the search engine will only find articles containing these two words, for example "diabetes AND insulin"; And with OR it is sought that at least one of the terms is, is very useful when we are going to put synonyms, for example "disease OR disorder", behaves in a way that is contrary to Boolean AND (decreases the number of results), OR increases Number of results.
We can also use NOT, so that only one of the two words we put, "diabetes NOT hyperglycemia".

As in any mathematical operation to give priority to some calculations on others we use the parentheses, because here we will do the same, "Diabetes AND (pathologies OR complications), first will look for material with the terms of the parenthesis and finally both will relate to the one that is Found outside it, in this case "Diabetes".

1.      Go to the most important databases, here I recommend first "PubMed" (for me the best), which is on the same page as MeSH, just click on "Search PubMed" if you have previously You are looking for thesaurus or if you are brave enough to put it directly into the search, then enter from your direct browser to PubMed.
You can also use "ENFISPO" (where articles appear in Spanish, although many less); or finally "SCOPUS".

FIRST CASE (FROM MESH)

SECOND CASE (FROM PubMed)

1.   -   Find the best article among those that appear, depending on how specific your search has appeared, more or less academic articles.

To get the article, if you want to download it, it is necessary to have an account at the university, with your password you can access and search the file that interested you; once found you can download it in PDF ready to be able to read it.

Ah !, within the website of the University of Seville and specifically within "Database" you can see everything discussed above but access directly from there.

Our group would have to demonstrate in seminar 2 whether hydroalcoholic solutions or antiseptic soaps were better. In the following publication I will expose the articles that allowed us to know which of the two methods was the best, as well as the other topics that were exposed using this search methodology.
